If you're a procurement manager or manufacturing engineer looking at an Ultimaker S3 purchase, you've probably already seen the list price. It's not for hobbyists building a home setup. If you're buying one for fun, you can skip most of this—just get the printer and some filament. Step 1: The Initial Setup (It's More Than Just the Printer)

From the outside, it looks like the most expensive part is the printer purchase. The reality is filament costs add up faster than you think—especially if you're using specialty materials.
In 2024, I tracked every spool we bought across two S3 units. Here's what the math actually looks like:
Material cost breakdown per year (for one printer running 40 hours/week)
- PLA (standard): About $25-35 per 750g spool. We go through about one spool every 3-4 weeks if we're doing mostly prototypes. So roughly 13 spools a year: $325-455 annually.
- Tough PLA or PET-G: $35-50 per spool. If you're printing functional parts, these are more common. Same usage rate: $455-650 annually.
- Nylon or Polycarbonate: $60-90 per spool. And you'll go through it faster if you need to reprint because these materials are more finicky. I'd budget $780-1,170 annually if this is your primary material.
One thing I learned: don't assume 'same specifications' meant identical results across vendors. We almost bought a cheaper third-party filament—vendor A quoted $22, vendor B said $18. - Firmware updates (free): Cura updates and printer firmware are free. But time costs money. Plan for 2-4 hours per quarter of your technician's time for updates and recalibration. At $40-60/hour burdened labor: $320-480 annually.
Bottom line: maintenance runs about $520-905 annually, not counting major repairs (which we'll get to).
Step 4: Software & Ecosystem Costs (The Slippery One)
The Ultimaker ecosystem has some hidden costs that are easy to miss if you're just comparing hardware list prices. Cura is free—that's great. But if you want the full Digital Factory cloud platform for managing multiple printers, tracking jobs, and controlling access... that's an extra line item.
I'm not going to quote exact pricing here because it depends on your organization size and whether you buy through a reseller. But a few things we learned:
- Digital Factory has a free tier for one printer. If you have two S3s or want the advanced features (like remote monitoring, access control), you'll need a paid plan. Budget $50-150/month depending on features and print volume.
- Training costs: We sent two engineers to a 2-day Ultimaker training. Cost was about $1,200 per person including the class and travel. (Worth it, honestly—halved our scrapped prints.)
Step 5: The Real TCO (Putting It All Together)

People assume the lowest quote means the vendor is more efficient. What they don't see is which costs are being hidden or deferred. A 'budget' $2,999 printer might have cheaper filament but higher print failure rates—which means more wasted material and labor. Our switch to the S3 paid for itself in reduced waste within 18 months.
Watch Out For These Common Mistakes
Three things I've seen trip people up when they roll out their first professional 3D printer:
1. Ignoring the labor cost of failed prints
A failed 12-hour print isn't just wasted filament. It's 12 hours of machine time that could have been making something good, plus the technician's time to diagnose and restart. The failure rate on a well-maintained S3 is about 5-8% with PLA (harder materials run higher). Budget for that in your TCO—don't assume every print succeeds.
2. Forgetting that '100 spools' print core rating depends on material
I assumed a print core would last 100 spools. Didn't verify. Turned out that rating is for standard PLA. If you're running abrasive materials (like carbon-fiber-filled nylon), you'll need a hardened nozzle and the print core may last only 20-30 spools. That changes your maintenance budget significantly.
3. Treating the printer as a 'set it and forget it' tool
It's tempting to think you can just buy the printer, load the filament, and hit print. But professional 3D printing requires ongoing calibration, bed leveling checks, and material profile tweaks.
